Until 1930, the designs of America's Cup yachts and challengers were open designs. In 1930 the mighty J-boats debuted and were sailed until WWII. The Cup races were interupted until 1958 when the series resumed using the 12 meter rule. The 12 meter yachts were raced until 1987. In 1989, the IACC rule was developed, with the first Cup series being 1992 when this class debuted with America3 and is still used today.
