In 1857 John Cox Stephens presented the trophy, renamed America's Cup, to the New York Yacht Club, to be used as a trophy to be challenged for by any foreign yacht club. The first challenge didn't come until 1868 from England's James Asbury and his schooner Cambria. In 1870, Cambria sailed against 14 New York Yacht Club yachts. The race was won by NYYC's yacht Magic.
The U.S. held America's Cup for 132 years, encompassing 25 successful cup defenses during which the American defenders won 78 of 86 races. This was the longest winning streak in the history of sports.
